Alan is a barrister employed as In-House Counsel. A Benefactor’s Scholar of the Middle Temple, Alan was called to the Bar 13 years ago. After pupillage at One Dr Johnson’s Buildings (the chambers of Rumpole creator John Mortimer) he accepted an invitation to become a tenant. He later practiced from Goldsmith’s Chambers (after the two sets merged).
He has wide experience including general common law, civil, landlord and tenant, family, employment, tort, contract, mental health review, crime and environmental law. He has a particular interest in media and military law and also health & safety practices.
He has extensive advocacy experience and has appeared in all of the criminal courts including the House of Lords. In addition, he has also appeared in the County and High Courts and Courts Martial Appeal Court and conducted many Courts Martial both in the United Kingdom and abroad.
He is also a lecturer at the MOD's Specialist Training School.
Whilst at the Bar, Alan worked as a Night Lawyer for some national newspapers where his primary role was proof reading the paper for issues such as defamation, contempt of court and copyright problems prior to publication. On occasions he also worked as the day lawyer where he was also responsible for contracts, licensing and other intellectual property matters.
He has successfully completed numerous courses since qualification including the Advanced International Advocacy Course at Keble College, Oxford and Advanced Advocacy Course at Jesus College, Cambridge.
He is an approachable but pugnacious Yorkshireman.
