Hospital at centre of abuse scandal to be demolished (19.07.2007)

I was interested to read Mike Lincoln's comment that he hopes the demolition of Budock Hospital will "...draw a clear line under the unacceptable services that [the Cornwall Partnership NHS Trust]… offered there".

I am concerned that those of your readers that are former patients of Budock Hospital (or who have relatives or friends that are former patients) should not conclude that there is nothing they can do about any incidents of abuse that former patients might have experienced.

Currently I act for several of the Hospital’s former patients in relation to various allegations of physical abuse and neglect.  I think it likely that some, if not all of those matters, will conclude with my clients receiving compensation for the harm they have suffered.

I also act for a number of other learning disabled people for whom the Trust is responsible and accommodates in the community in what are known as supported living houses. The common theme among those clients relates to the Trust’s management of household expenditure on behalf of the residents. I think it likely that these matters will conclude with the Partnership Trust refunding money to my clients that the Partnership Trust was not entitled to spend.

Unlike Mr Lincoln, I see the demolition of Budock Hospital as being no more than the demolition of an outdated and inadequate building that the NHS should have ceased using several years ago. Mr Lincoln might hope that it will ‘draw a clear line’ under the the Partnership Trust's previous conduct, but he is wrong.

It is for this reason that I would be interested in hearing from any of your readers who have direct knowledge or experience of any alleged questionable practices of the Partnership Trust and its staff at Budock Hospital or elsewhere in the community.
