Follett Stock’s sponsorship of Exeter City’s first home game of the new season, against Westcountry rivals Bristol Rovers, was an emotional roller-coaster of a day.
A capacity crowd of nearly 8,000 honoured the memory of the Grecians’ talismanic centre-forward, Adam Stansfield, who tragically died this month at the age of 31, with a rousing and heart-felt ovation.
When Exeter scored an early opener the entire ground rose to its feet again as Stanno’s number 9 shirt was held aloft and the players dedicated the goal to him.
With Bristol Rovers taking the lead with goals either side of half-time it seemed that the crowd would be denied the fitting outcome that everyone wanted, but a late penalty and a nerve-biting last few minutes brought about a 2-2 scoreline that did justice to the day.
Despite the sombre occasion all at Exeter City were determined to enjoy the day and Follett Stock’s guests experienced a great deal of conviviality both before and after the match.
We particularly enjoyed picking the man of the match, full back Steve Tully, whose feisty defence and imaginative attacking play reflected our own approach to the law!
All in all a good afternoon and one we look forward to repeating on many occasions!
